This extraordinary image is of the dry cracked clay bed from the miners’ tank site at the famous Coocoran Opal Fields. an area visitors rarely see. Opal clay slurry from numerous agitators runs off into the settling pond hence the variety of colours and textures due to the various fields and depths that are being mined.

Using a drone equipped with a hi-res camera, we chose a 12m x 10m grid and captured hundreds of photos which were later stitched together to create one massive composite image.

6GB of image files were sent to a factory int eh Netherlands to produce our custom printed floor at Down To Earth Opals. The substrate is commercial vinyl with a clear tough coating on top to minimise scratching. What you see here is the first ever 3D like replica of the natural cracked earth and mud curls.

This project was inspired by Lightning Ridge local and DTEO founder Vicki Bokros, photography and editing by Peter Chaffey, and floor printing by Forbo Australia.
